School Shooting

General information in handling a school shooting.

MITIGATION / PREVENTION

  • Prepare a building security plan that includes:
  • Lock down of students (CODE BLUE).
  • I.D. badge and enforcement policy.
  • Regular maintenance of door security and video systems.
  •  School lock out policy for regular school days.
  • Search policy for lockers, vehicles and students with reasonable suspicion.
  • Develop programs and interventions to create a positive and supportive climate between students and staff.
  • Prepare School Shooting action plan that utilizes the School Safety Team to carry out its designated duties.

 

PREPAREDNESS

  • Conduct School Safety team meetings with tabletop exercises designed to stimulate crisis reaction and response.
  • Inventory first aid supplies and equipment.  Order replacements as needed.
  • Test communications equipment – Base and portable radios, cell phones and e-mail.

 

RESPONSE

  • DIAL 8-911 – keep them on the line and updated.
  • Announce “CODE BLUE” action plan.
  • School Safety team shall assemble as soon as possible, when safe.
  • Notify Security booth (high school only) to secure the booth and attempt to locate crime scene and record any available activity.
  • Locate crime scene and attempt to determine injuries and location of shooter.
  • Modify lock down of students as needed based on location and scope of incident.  Evacuate areas if needed.
  • Follow directions of emergency services as they arrive at the building.
